Mixed Water Media on Paper
2003
Private Collection
This is the largest painting I have done to date. I placed a large piece of paper from a watercolor roll on the floor, and created an underpainting by splattering watercolor paint over scribbles of oil pastel. I liked the finished underpainting so much that I chose the horses as a subject to paint negatively so I could allow large parts of the beautiful paint underneath to show through. I also used transparent paint on top, so that the texture of the underpainting would still be visible. I imagine these horses to be in the desert of southern Utah, a place that resonates deeply with me.
