The Cows of Les Contamines   < < previous      next > >

Watercolor, Crayon, and Soft Pastel on Paper
2002
22" x 30"
Collection of the Artist

This painting was done from a photograph I took while hiking with my husband in the French Alps in the summer of 2000.  We had settled in a field near Les Contamines with our baguettes and cheese for lunch, and these cows just kept moving closer and closer to us - I don't know if they were looking for handouts, or just curious.  We joked about it by singing the "Jaws" theme music (where the shark moves in for the kill).  As they loomed over me from behind while I ate my lunch, I turned around and snapped the photo, which is the perspective the painting is done from.  While painting the piece I was inspired by the memory of the peace and tranquility, as well as the humor, of the moment.
